The necessity for definite and immediate action in regard to the epidemic of diphtheria in Ashburton was emphasised at a special meeting of the local branch of the Plunket Society this afternoon. TRAM OAR, AND LORRY. AVANGANUI, Aug. 20. A tram-car and a motor-lorry laden with metal came into violent collision this morning at the corner of the Avenue and Liverpool Street. The impact was very severe, the tram-car being derailed and the motormnn’s platform smashed to pulp. The motorman, P. R. Pitt, was jambed in and actually buried in the wreckage, having to be dug out, but fortunately he escaped without serious injury. The lorry driver, L. 11. Neilsou, also luckily escaped injury. A young lady passenger sustained a nasty bruise, but the others, fortunately got off scot free. Glass from the .smashed wind screen was scattered in all directions.

WOMAN DROWNED. NAPIER, Aug. 20. Miss Glover, a visitor from Sydney, who was staying with Mrs P. J. Thompson. at Olive Grange, went for a bathe on the beach this morning and got into difficulties. Her cries were hear 1, rnd she was brought out of the water, blit efforts at resuscitation failed, and a doctor, on arrival, pronounced life extinct. SENTENCE ON WOMAN. NAPIER, Aug. 20. Mary Ann Wetsoboy, who was found guilty yesterday of using an instrument for illegal purpose and recommended to mercy on account of her ago, was sentenced to-day by Judge Ostler to one year’s hard labour. A GARAGE BURNT. DUNEDIN, August 23. A garage at Brighton, with a large service motor ’bus owned by A. F. Knowles, was destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon. A bucket brigade saved Knowles’ house. The view tlbat post-graduate instruction of medical practitionery in midwifery is necessary even if only to combat the very prevalent belief that surgery is a cure for the lack of obstetrical experience, is advanced by Dr Henry Jellett, of Christchurch, consulting obstetrician, to the Health Department. In a report to the Department on maternal welfare, he adds: “ T refer particularly to the increasing tendency not only in New Zealand hut elsewhere to perform the caesarean section for so many types of obstetrical complication.”
