[Australia & N.Z. Cable Association.] ATHLETIC CHAMPTONSHIPS. BRISBANE, Aug. 21. The Victorians were tho record breakers at the fifteenth biennial Australian and New Zealand track field games championship on the Exhibition Ground to-day, in the presence of three thousand spectators. The weather conditions were again fdeal. and the track was good. It certainly was a day out for the Victorians ns the previous Saturday was a N.S.W. day. Victoria annexed the 440 hurdles, 880 yards champion,ship, three mile run, and high jump, thus equalising the N.S.W. championship total. The issue for the championship then became exciting.
Australasian records were broken wholesale. Probably the most magnificent effort of the day was an epic run by Hyde in the three mile run. Mason’s feat, in establishing a new Australasian record in the high jump, was the result of brilliant jumping. Grclian's Mice in the 220 yards was commendable. he worthily sustaining his reputation. Owing to an injured leg Burns (N.S.W.) was unable to compete.
Tho championship was won by Victoria with eight firsts, including a point for the Decathlon championship. 440 Hurdles.—Watson (Victoria) L Brooks (South Australia) 2, Hawkins (Queensland) 3. Won by six yards. Time ,56 l-ssecs is a now Australasian record. The previous time was 57 2-5. SBQ yards Championship.—Whyte (Victoria) L Norman (N.S.W.) 2, Glynn (South Australia) 3. Won by six yards. The time lrnin 56sccs, is an Australasian record, knocking three-tenths of a second off the previous record hold by Watson (Victoria) Mile Walk.—Parker (N.S.W.) 1, Cabot (N.Z.) 2, McCayanagh (South Australia) 3. Won by 150 yards. Cabot was comfortable second. Time 0,43 o-5. The New Zealander’s time was 7.14 2-5.
220 yards.— Grehan (Queensland) 1, Parker (Queensland) 2'. Winn (N.S.W.) 3. Won by.one and a half yards. His time 21 3-5 seconds, equals the Australasian record, also held by the winner.
Three mile run. —Hyde (Victoria) 1, W. Suvidan (N.Z.) 2, Banvick (Tasmania) 3. This was a great run, and Hyde, in breaking Rose’s Australasian record of 14.45 1-5, was cheered to the echo. Won by 170 yards. His time was 14.42 2-5.
High Jump.—Mason (Victoria) 6»H 1. Maher (Queensland) 5.10 2. Ebert (N.S.W.), Shirley (N.Z.) and Brooks (South Australia) 5.9 3. Mason at his third attempt, broke the Australasian record of 6ft 1 3-16 inches, held by Kelly (Victoria).
Putting the Shot.—Mclntosh (V ictoria) 42. S ( a new Queensland record) 1, Lewis (Queensland) 41.7 2, Keskitier (Queensland) 32.8 3. • Broad Jump.—Day (Queensland) 21.9 1, Evans (Queensland) 21.7 2, Cunningham (N.S.W.) 21.4-1 3. Subsequently Evans jumped 22 feet 5 inches, and established a new Queensland record.
Teams Medley Relay (teams of four, one to run 880yds, one 440vds. and two 220yds).—
Victoria (Whyte, Carroll. Watson and Kroger) 1. N.S.W. (Norman. Hunt, Winn and Cunningham) 2. Queensland (Pranzer, Parker, Mills and Grehan) 3. In thos event Whyte established a lead which was never lost. The time, 3mi ns 33 2-5 secs, is a new Australasian record.
