[by TELEGRAPH —PEK PIIESS ASSOCIATION. PAGE TRAGEDY. EVIDENCE OF SERVANT. AUCKLAND, lust. 19. Eileen Graham, giving evidence iu the charge against Page, said she was a domestic employed by Mrs Page. On the morning of the tragedy, Pago pushed witness into the bedroom, and on to the bed, but lie did not tiy u kiss her. Witness said: “Lot mo go! Yon have a wife of your own.” Accused said : “I have gone too far! You have seen all you are going to see of this world. So have I and tho~bables.” Witness then said she would bring a policeman, and she ran to Colqulioun’s house, and Colqulioun went to Page’s house. After further evidence, counsel for Page said he could not get any assistance in his instructions from the accused. Ho would plead not guilty on Page’s behalf. Page was committed for trial. COURT CHARGES. WELLINGTON, August 10. Alexander McKay Wallace, 30, and Eric Lionel ITodgons, 20, were charged at the Magistrate’s Court, with stealing four letters, valued at Is, the property of John Berryman, also being on licensed premises after hours. The Chief Detective said the accused were members of tho crow of the Port Kembla. They were refused drink at tho Pier Hotel on Sunday. They open ed four letters in the rack. On the charge of theft, each was convicted and discharged, and on tho other charge, fined £2, or seven days’ imprisonment. Seven youths who had pleaded guilty to unlawful conversion of motor cars, were sentenced us follows: Basil Frederick Baillic, 18, thirteen charges, Robert Seymour James, 18, twelve charges, each three years at Borstal Institute. Stewart Askew John Robertson. 18, William John Urquhnrt, 18, seven and eight charges respectively, throe years at Borstal Institute. John William Troy, IS), two charges’conversion, one of stealing a watch, four years’ probation, and to repay £O7 13s lOd at 10s a week, one-third of the damage to tlie car, and the value of the watch. William Joseph Condon, 18, Eric John Bonner. 19, one and two charges of conversion respectively, probation for three years and to repay £OO 13s 4d at 10s a week. All three wore ordered to refrain from association with one another, and from entering billiard saloons. Their leisure hours arc to be under tho control oT tho Probation Officer. FOB GEE GETS PROBATION. DUNEDIN, Aug. 19. William John Bardie, aged twentytwo, appeared before His Honour, Mr Justice Sim, in the Supreme Court this morning, for sentence on charges of uttering and forging a cheque for £l7 fis on the Commercial Bank of Australia. at Onmaru. llis Honour ordered tho prisoner to lie released on probation for three years, la condition being that ho make restitution of £22 0s by weekly instalments of £l. Another condition of probation was that tho prisoner pay the costs of the prosecution (£2 3s) within- three calendar months.
TWO CARS TAKEN. DUNEDIN, Aug. 19. Two cars were taken from Moray Place best night. The pwners were Messrs W. Dawson and George Chance. A coincidence is that they are directors of the same firm (Dawsons Ltd.). They parked their cars on tho same stand at tho same time and accompanied each ether to a dance, and returned together, to find their cars missing. The matter was reported to the police, with the result that both cars were found abandoned this nfternoon, in different parts of the town —one at Mornington, and the other near the Boys’ High School.
SOUTHLAND COAL DISPUTE. INVERCARGILL, Aug. 18. Conditions at the Black Diamond coal mine have not- yet readied normality. The men who truck 'are gradually being replaced. There are only four or five vacancies to fill. NEW ZEALAND MEAT BOARD. WELLINGTON, Aug. 19. The returning officer announces that the postal ballot iu regard to the Southland District, resulted in A- S. Holmes (Waimahaka) and G. P. Johnson. (Waikaka Valley) being elected as two delegates to represent thpt district on the Electoral Committee which meet in Wellington on the 26th of August to consider the fourth annual report and statement of accounts of tho New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board, and to elect two producers’ representatives on the Board.
