FOOTBALL.
On Cass Square to-morrow, the first game of the new competition arranged with tho West Coast Rugby Union will take place when Excelsiors and Kanieri meet. The two teams are evenly matched nnd a good game should result.
On No. 2. Ground what should prove a very interesting game will take place when teams from the Reefton ■State School and Hokitika District High School meet in their annual infier’school contest. School teams generally provide a good exhibition of open play, and to-morrow’s match will be eagerly looked forward to.
The Excelsior team for to-morrow against Kanieri is as follows:—Carter. King A., Best, Preston, Hahn, Freitas. Barron, Shaw, McCleary, Kinloch, King, Henderson, .Christensen, Dale, Nightingale. The above must be on the Square at 2.30 sharp.
GREY SCHOOL v. HOKITIKA SCHOOL. A football match for the Newman Shield between Hokitika District High School and the Greymouth Technical School teams was played on Cass Square this morning and resulted in a win for the Grey School by 9 points (3 tries) to 8 points (two tries, one converted). For Hokitika tries were scored by Davidson and King, Hamilton converting one. For Greymouth Birchfield, Baldwin and Currie scored. Mr C. Gnylor was referee. An unfortunate accident happened, one of the visiting lads named Murray having his wrist broken.
KOIvATAHI FOOTBALL CLUB. At a well-attended meeting of the Kokatalii Football Club held on Wednesday evening, the 18th. Inst., considerable surprise nnd disappointment was expressed at the action of the Westland Sub-Union in cancelling the Breeze Shield competition. The decision to commence a new competition in conjunction with tho Greymouth teams, eliminate any possibility of the local team participating, the reason being that a team could not he fielded in Greymouth on account of the inability of players to get away from work iu time. It was unanimously agreed to appoint the Club’s coach, Mr W. Montgomery, to act as a deputation to wait on the Sub-Union at tlbeir next meeting, with a. request that a more suitable arrangement he made. For Scots, Watt scored one try,and converted and kicked a penalty. Mason scored one try. For Wairarapa, tries were got by Traill, Cormack, Dickens (2). E. Welch, Jago. while Falloon converted one. WAIROA, August 19. A ror>. men’s hockey match for the Single Cup and badges, played here this afternoon, .between Poverty Bay and Wniroa, resulted in a, draw, four goals each. Wniroa were better in the first half and scored two to Poverty Bay’s nil. hut the visitors were in better condition which told in the second half, when they netted four and tlie visitors team only two goals.
