flteucer Telegrams.] SERIOUS FOREST FIRES. (Received this day at 11.25 a.m.) SAN FRANCISCO, July 20. Forset fires have been burning practically unchecked for several days in a dozen northern Californian Counties. The ravages of timber lands in or near the five national forests, left a smoking trail through hundreds of acres of private lauds. It is estimated that over one hundred thousand acres are now burned. The historic mining town, Quartz, was destroyed. The neighbouring town of Stent was partly destroyed, while the residents of Standard City in the direct path of the flames, are reported to be fleeing with their possessions, half of the people being exhausted. Firo crews totalling more than two thousand, are continuing their efforts to stem the spread of the lire, but the weather forecast of continued high temperature and low humility, gives little hope of cessation for some days.
SUPPORTING OLD TESTAMENT. (Received this day at 10.15 a.m.) NEW YORK, July 20. Air Alelvin Kyle, President of the Theological Semitary, St. Louis, who has returned from an inspection of the ruins of the Biblical City, Kuvatlisepper .founded by the Canaanites 2000 8.C., says the Old Testament story has been fully corroborated by recent excavations. The successive ages of the city mentioned in the Book of Joshua were traced by layers of ashes, proving that it had been burned five times. The dates, also, are verified by ail examination of the kitchen utensils and the well stones.
