The Coal Industry Special Tribunal has issued its award in connection with the claims of the Engine Drivers and Firemen’s Association, for a variation out of which claims arose the recent stoppage in the coal mines throughout the Commonwealth. The terms are not published, hut it has been ascertained that the claims of the men were refused.
THE TIMBER INDUSTRY. SYDNEY, July 21. In addition to the Union Company, other lines engaged in the carriage of timber from tne New South AVales ports to New Zealand they intend to increase the rates similarly. The reason for the increase is the higher cost of coal, increased ship repairing charges, additional costs brought about by the AA'orker.s’ Compensation Act, and an increase of twenty-five per cent just announced in the towage charges. Nearly all the timber exported from New South AVales goes to New Zealand owing to the Compensation Act. 'Flic timber industry in New South AVales is practically at a standstill, so far fifty mills having closed down. The remaining few mills arc continuing until the logs which have been brought in are cleared away. Then it is stated these also will lie forced to dose down.
