SAN FRANCISCO, April 2G. It is widely recognised throughout fruit growing circles on the Pacific coast that the English arsenic scare had a disastrous effect on the market for American apples, but with characteristic energy, which within the past decade had conquered tlie European field for .American fruit, the Dicifie States notably California, are taking energetic steps to correct- the situation. An enquiry regarding measures contemplated by the Californian Department of Agriculture show that officials do not consider arsenical spray sufficiently harmful to cause injurious effect.

Irving AYoodin, sales manager of tlie California fruit exchange, said a majority of packers feel this criticism is unnecessary and uncalled for. Exactly the aimc grade fruit is handled and under the same growing conditions is being consumed in United States market daily, with no trouble fronu ,'the Health Officers, or other Government Agencies. AYoodin added that chemists had analysed specimens on which a residue appeared in excessive amounts, pud had found on an accurate test that in order for a person to consume enough arsenic to l>c injurious it would he necessary to eat more apples than the system would hold. Injury from overeating would in a majority of cases he greater than from the spray California packers are using. There is an aggrieved situation in English markets and they are taking every precaution possible in the matter of spraying to see that there is not an overabundance of spray, and ill any cases in -wliicli it appears excessive each apple is being wiped to eliminate lany possible cause of complaint. AYoodin agreed that wiping, unlike the ease of Australian apples which must travel a long time does not injuriously remove the preservative mould from the apple skin, since the Pacific Coast apples are put into the London market within a fortnight after picking.
