EDEN BYE-ELECTION. WELINGTON, March 2G. The Eden bye-election will take place on Thursday, April loth. AUCKLAND, March 26. Air J. Rea has retired from the Helen contest. The Labour candidate for Eden, Air 11. G. R. Ala,soil, delivered his first address at Henderson. The night was wet and on tv about- thirty were present. Tire caiuliatc said tlic most interesting feature of the eleeion so fai was the differences which had arisen in the Reform Party’s ranks. He referred to the Government’s overwhelming majority and Urged the electors to strengthen the Opposition. Labour was tire real Opposition. A vote of thanks and confidence was carried. FIRE. AT AIARTON. AIARTON. March 29.
A fire at two o’clock yesterday morning destroyed the storeroom . of the Chib Hotel; also stock estimated at over £7OO. The cause of the fire is unknown. The store and contents were covered by insurance. A PRISONER ESCAPES. TATJAIARUNUI, Alarch 29. John Johnson made his escape from the Erua prison camp oil Saturday afternoon and no trace of the prisoner has so far been found. There is no indication of the direction in which he has gone. NEW TELEGRAPH ENGINEER. WELLINGTON, March 29. Sir James l’arr, Postmaster-General, announces the appointment of Afr A. Gibbs to the position of Chief Telegraph Engineer which recently boeamo vacant owing to tho retirement on superannuation of Mr A. E. Shrimpton.
