CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD.
The Canterbury Education Board met at Christchurch on Friday, present -.Messrs T. Hughes (chairman). J. Maze. G. \V. Armitage, W. 11. W'insor, J. G. (low, E. H. Andrews, C. S.
Thompson, R. Wild, W. P. .Spencer, and IT. J. Bigncll. Appointments made included:— Blackball, .Mr (). D. Sewell, assistant master; Greytnoiitli, Aliss Al. A. O’Brien, assistant mistress.
Resignations accepted included:— Blackball, .Miss E. A. Stubbs; Oleum, A Hiss L. Nolan; Hokitika. Aliss I). Reiilington. In regard to the Department's request for a list of works, in order of urgency, proposed during the 11)20-27 financial year, the Buildings Committee reported that the architect, assistantarchitect and foreman at Greymouth had been asked to prepare lists for consideration at the meeting of the hoard next month.
.Monday, April 20, was fixed for (lie election of school committees-. Letters were received from the DejTiirtmeat agreeing to the establishment of household schools at Evans Creek and Alt. Parker.
The Agricultural and Manual Instruction Committee reported that the Belfast School had won the .M'Farbuie Shield 1 ampeJ if ion for the best gardens. with Id!) marks. Other competitors were: Ratigiora second. Iff ; Rieini ton third. Bit); Oiiruhia fourth, l”i: Eerni.it!:> anti Dunsande! equal tilth. ciicli. Belfast has won the shield twice in succession. The Ashby liergh Shield garden competition in connection with the Greymouth A. and P. Association resulted as follows :•
Ngahere, first, 223 marks; Kuiiaiiga, second. IPS; Cohdcn, third. IS!); Ross and itiiru. equal louiTli, 185. Xgaiiere has won the competition thrive in succession.
Mr E. 11. Andrews, said that lie wished to protest .igain- 1 . lonelier-, applying lor positions llu-y did .mi intend in take. He mentioned particularly the Akaroa, school, saying that, two touchers had “turned down” the position of head master there, and that there was a glaring ease in Christchurch. He added that the practice (Fused great inconvenience.' It was neiessary to select- teachers on their grading and sometimes they withdrew their applications. Mr R. Wild moved that teachers who applied for positions and were successful hut withdrew should not lie eligible for another position for two years. He said that tinhoard had a rule that teachers must he in positions IV,r two years before they were eligible for other positions, and that the. principle, should he npnlicd to teachers who applied for positions and withdrew. Mr T. Hughes, chairman. said that the motion was somewhat drastic, and on his suggestion Mi- Wild withdrew his motion and the question was referred to the Appointments Committee lor a report.
