AUSTRALASIOX CHAMPIONSHIPS. AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION (Received this day at 9.0 a.m.) SYDNEY, Feb. 23. The Australian bowls c.,rnivai, which lias attracted 771 entries tit the singles championship and 210 in the links, lias commenced in fine hot iwiaimi. The carnival will conclude oil Glh. March.
Prominent among the New Zealanders who have entered for the singles the preliminary round, of which was played to-day are: .Melbourne, Orchard, Vic. Carey, G. Farrow and Parsons. All four won their way through to to-morrow’s rounds. Carey and parsons received byes. Melbourne Orchard and Farrow had easy \ ielories. Both the latter were in good form. Orchard going ahead from the early stages of the match and drawing shots perfectly. He conceded his opponent only 8 points.
Farrow had an even more decisive sii'cess. winning by 23—4. The New Zealanders, by special permission of the Australian Bowling Council, are playing a cording to their own Association rules. A number of local bowlers think the Association overstepped the mark in granting this
com .'ssion. Rain marred the play in the afternoon. but no matches were postponed. The first, round will lie played tomorrow and it is expected the final will be played mi Friday when the rinks championship commences. New Zealand has entered two rinks which are to be skippered by Orchard and Parsons, being bath strong quartettes. A Parsons (New Zealand) received a forfeit from Buuyaii (N.S.YV.) Colquhon (X.S.W.) received a lorleit from Harford (Now Zealand). Ah Kinon (X.S.AY.) boat -f. Butler (New Zealand) 21 —B. Langley (X.S.AY.) against Brabant (New Zealand) struck out. , Orchard (New Zealand) beat- Hummel (X.S.AY.) 21 -8. Farrow (New Zealand) beat AA’att (X.S.AY. 23-1. Packard (NS.AY.) leaf McLean (New Zealand) 22—8. A’ic. Carey (New Zealand) received a forfeit from Gartrell (E.S.YY.) R. Melbourne (X.S.AY.) beat X. Casey (Fiji) 21—12
