WELLINGTON EXPLOSION
NIVEN'S FOUNDRY DAMACED. OPERA HOUSE AUDIENCE A LA RATED. [by TKPEORAPIT I»ER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. January 21. At 10.3(1 o’clock to-niglit people in the vicinity of Wakefield Street were startled by a terrific explosion. An investigation showed that an oxygen or compressed air cylinder belonging to Niven and Co., iron founders, had exploded from some unknown cause. A fire also took place, hut it has not been ascertained whether the lire caused the explosion or the explosion caused the tire.
Niven’s building had the root lifted and tike front blown out.
The Opera House, close by, felt the full force of the explosion. A large audience was alarmed by the way the building shook, a window being blown out of the dressing rooms. AVith great presence of mind, Aliss Dorothy Lena continued singing, which had a great effect. Only meagre particulars are available.
