WESTPORT LEASE-HOLDERS
WESTPORT, Jan. 21
Leaseholders of colliery and other reserves in Westport held a meeting in the Town Hall to-night, when an association was formed for the purpose of urging the Government to give leaseholders the freehold of their sections. NIfLFOItD SOUND HYDRO SCHEME THE ALTERNATIVE PROPOSAL. WELLINGTON. .Jan. 22. A license has been granted to a number of Wellington business men to use for electrical purposes, the water from: (1), the falls, rivers and streams discharging into Deep Cove or any other part of Smith Sound, and (2), Lake Manapouri in the fiord country. From these sources it is expccted to be able, ultimately, to develop three hundred thousand horse power for manufacturing nitrates from the air and other electro-chemical industries which require cheap power. TWO SUDDEN DEATHS. AUCKLAND, January 20: Two elderly women died suddenly yesterday. Helen Simpson, aged 72. of Pousonbv, was found dead in her home at six o’clock in the evening. She was in her usual good health in the morning, hut when her daughter returned she found her dead on tho floor.
Eliza Titchener, aged 78, was found dead in lied. Her family had been away camping for some days. Jt is supposed that she died in her sleep. A BOY’S DEATH. PROTEST JIY FATHER. WELLINGTON. .Jan. 22. At the inquest into the death of a child, aged five, who died under an operation for the removal of tonsils, the father protested strongly against assistants or students being allowed, without supervisors, to carry out intricate operations. He considered a skilled man would have saved the hoy’s life.
The evidence showed that the operation nils performed by two doctors, one will) thirteen aifd the other with seven months’ experience.
The Coroner, hqwover. pointed out that one of them had considerable experience in this particular operation, ami appeared to have employed Hie usual and Lost methods, though the operation resulted in a failure. The Coroner gave an open verdict. BULK MOTOR Sl'ißl'l. FIRST TANKER DUE. WELLINGTON, Jan. 20. Tlie British Imperial Oil Company’s first cargo of bulk motor spirit is duo at Wellington to-morrow by the oil tanker Murex from Singapore and Balik Papan. via Sydney. A big oil reservoir, which fins been erected at Miramar, will receive the first shipment of bulk motor spirit yet brought to New Zealand. The Miramar scheme also embodies the storing of fuel oil from Eastern ports for bunkering oil fuel burners which visit Wellington. 11l all parts of the world where petrol is sold to the public in bulk the saving in Llie cost of tins and eases lias carried a reduction in price to consumers. In New Zealand it is anticipated that this will mean a reduction of over L’250.000 annually.

Mrs Annie Air Lean, charged with driving in a manner dangerous to the public had her motor driving license cancelled for six months, hut no penalty otherwise, the ALigistrate holding there was no recklessness in driving, hut defendant lost her nerve in an emergency and kneokod two foot passengers over. ILLEGAL LOTTERIES. GISBORNE. January 22. For selling tickets in an illegal lottery. a. prosecution similar to cases m other parts, AVilliam .McDonald was fined C2. Arc Levy. S.AL. stating that in future offenders will he more severely dealt with.
