C. S. SIDELIGHTS. NEW YORK, November 3. Results of the nation-wide elections throw interesting sidelights upon the movements of public opinion in the t'nited States. Tammany Hall gained one ol the most sweeping victories in the history of New York City. Senator Walker was elected -Mayor with a vote of 100,000 and with a complete Demo--nitic city Government, while Bostoi traditionally a stronghold of tbe Democratic Party and a counterpart of New York Tammany, elected a Republican .Mayor, Mr Alaleolm NieholK, for the first time in many years.
New Jersey elected Air Alooro Governor and endorsed the “wets. Three cities in which the Ku Klux Elan was a hitter issue, recorded one victory and two defeats for Hint nr-
gaiiisatmu. I Indianapolis elected Alt* John Dina! (Republican) who was supported by the lx la n. Buffalo elected Air Francis Schawl, anil Detroit elected John Smith, antiIxlan .Mayors. Other cities and States showed a complete lack of uniformity. Republicans and Democrats being fairly equally successful in gaining various offices.
ITALY’S DEBT TO U.S.A. WASHINGTON, November 5. While Italian and American Debt Commissioners have begun discussions behind closed doors, observers hcie point out several important facts, which, from the point ot view of practical politics, will perhaps play a more important part in landing the Italian debt than the actual technical matters considered by the commissions. I hetc is a probability that Sentaor Borah mav he asked to outline his views concerning Italy’s rapacity to pay, in order to prevent a detent such as with the French. Italy’s desire to obtain American capital lor developing her industries is also an important factor in bringing both the parties together. The negotiations would become futile through the Senate's objection of the terms. Senator Borah's views seem to he not unalterably opposed to lenient terms for the first few years, due to Italy’s present unfavourable economic conditions, but the Enited States, in his opinion, should obtain greater sums in luln** it Italy's economic position improved. The cliiel hope of a quick settlement of the Italian debt problem seems to lie in the reported determination ol Air Al.cllon (I.S.A. Treasurer), not to suffer a second re-
verse. CANADIAN i’OI.ITU'S. OTTAWA. Nov. 5. The I’rctiiier. Air McKenzie King, announces that he will meet the new l’arliament, which will he assembled at the earliest |*>ssil>lc date. ANTI-SALOON I.EAGLE.
