Immediately alter leaving the polling booth in a school at which he had voted, Robert .Tames Wilson, of Softon. a. farm labourer, aged 70, dropped dead this morning. Wilson was at work yesterday, and appeared to be in his usual health. He had a serious illness last year. He leaves a widow and one son.

ESCAPED PRISONER. CHRISTCHURCH. November 4

Charles Henry Augutus Jones, a prisoner who escaped from Paparua Prison last month is still in Christchurch. Chief Detective Gibson stated to-dav that Jones had been seen in Linwood on .Monday. Two houses have been entered by Jones. The police report be did not break into the houses, hut walked in through the doors. At one place he took 10s. At the other, when seen by a woman he. decamped without any loot.

On account of the fall in the tunnel at Lake Coleridge on October "2nd., when three men lost their lives, it has been decided to make a deviation in the tunnel. The work will he commenced about two chains hack from ihe fall, and the curve to the light will be made. The deviation will not affect the elliciencv of the tunnel, as men wore engaged on the construction ol the curve when the fall took place. The new lino of the curve will

he on an angle of about twenty degrees, which is about ten degrees less than that of the original tunnel.. Air Behan expects the work to he complet'd within contract, time despite the fact that operations have been suspended for practically a month.

DUNEDIN SENTENCES. DUNEDIN, November 3

At the Supreme Court, Baden Powell Welsh was charged with obtaining £0 by means of a forged telegram, and was found " not guilty.” William Anderson was found guilty of indecent assault on a child, five and a half years old. the jury adding a strong recommendation to mercy as they considered the act more foolish than one done with criminal intent. Sentence was deferred till Thursday.

SUPRKAIE COURT. DUNEDIN. November 5. At the Supreme Court. William Anderson. aged 05, found guilty of an indecent assault on a little girl, was sentenced to three months gaol.
