In regard to the construction ot bridges proposals approved provisionally are the greatest in the Dominion, being timber bridges 2,sSSft in length of an actual cost ol 037.351). The proposals in hand were again the largest. 2.093 foot of timber and concrete at a cost of 045.2-1 1. 3he works completed during the year were timber and concrete 218 led, at a cost of ct;,032, tin- highest, district expenditure for the Dominion. The maintenance of the main highways in No. 12 District, 334 miles, was the largest in the South Island, totalling £10.478 or an average of fill per mile. In regard to construction of new roads, £9.0(4 were sue lit in tin* district, being ibe second highest sum in the South Tsland. These figures indicate the district is meriting a good deal ol attention from the highways authorities.
