NATURALISTS LET DOWN. -MELBOURNE, July 28. A party of officers and men of tbt American Fleet, were taken by special train to Ballarat, where they were entertained by (lie Mayor and citizens. Another excursion, on a large scale, proved a fiasco. Arrangements had I ice u made by the Field Naturalists Society to'take a party to the neighbouring'hills to gather wild flowers. The naturalists were to have met the sailors T in the city, hut the latter failed to keep the appointment. DO I NOS OF THE FLEET. (Received this clay at 8 a.m.) SYDNEY, July 28. Members of the Fleet enjoyed a number of excursions to holiday resorts, including a trip to the Jenolan Caves. A baseball match between New South Wales and a team from the warship Tennessee was won bv the lonner. -I The Admirals and officers were entertailK’d by the State Coventor at a garden party at the Oovernnient V House. Other functions were a dinner hv the Admirals to the ofiicers of the Australian Fleet on the warship California and a hall by the officers of the Australian Fleet. The warship West Virginia has been advised from Washington that she had won the ” Meat Ball,” which is a red pennant flown from the masthead, signifvittg the ship had won the gunnery j. and engineering prize of the American Navy. The tests lasted over a. year and to-day with full ceremony the pennant was broken at the foremast. This is the most coveted trophy of the Navv.
