THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
Rinnini; Bkkohu tiif. Wind. Fnder the new system of department redemption, in the Financial Statement. “an annually increasing reduction in the amount of the. Public Debt" is to he ensured, hut the announcement would create more interest if it. were meant that the burden of the public debt would Vie annually reduced. As a matter of fact. New Zealand. like the rest of the dominions, is discharging its debts hv writing another LOT. and saying “Thank God. that's paid!” There are some very sage remarks at the conclusion of the document, conveying a grave warning against over-importation and emphasising the necessity for public and private economy. But the Estimates call for an increase of £230,000 in Customs revenue and for an increase of £1,400.000 in departmental expenditure, so that the pious hopes of the Minister obviously are not expected to he realised. Departmental expenditure during the current- financial year is expected to he higher even than in the wild boom year of 1020-21. T{ New Zealand's ship of State strikes a squall in the next few months, she will do so with all sails set. —“Lvtteltoii Times”
