(“Sydney Sun” Cables). INFLUENZA. NEW YORK, March 12. A highly contagious disease, not yet identified, has caused 201 deaths in nine days at Chicago. Health Commissioner Dunedeson and a corps o: chemists and physicians are working intensively to determine tlie exact nature of the disease, which, unless taken in time, develops into influenza or pneumonia, carrying a high mortality rate. Twenty-seven persons have died ol influenza-pneumonia during the past twenty-four hours, the disease being traceable to the mysterious infection. Whole families have been stricken and the disease is also prevalent in other centres of population. It is characterised by acute pains, a burning sensation in eyes, protraction, high temperature and nose bleeding. Commissioner Dunedeson has issued a general warning, urging the sufferers to go to bed, summon medical aid, and virtually isolate themselves. U.S.A. AND TURKEY. WASHINGTON. March 14. Senator Borah, chairman of the F S A. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told President Borah that there was little prospect of action on the I ausanne ’I rcaty with I urkev this session. The President is anxious for the ratification, ill order to prevent Hie embarassment of Americans in Turkey, which might result, should the Government be left without treaty relations.
A STRANGE MALADY. OYER 390 DEATHS. NEW YORK. March 14. * Chicago Health Commissioner. Mr Bundeson. announced that the stiangc malady (cabled on Afarch 10th) is still increasing. There were 112 new cases reported, with thirty-three deaths during the last twenty-four hours, making nMotal of 312 deaths from respiratory diseases since February Ist.
