BOY SCOUTS

(Contributed). At the quarterly meeting of the 2nd. Hokitika Troop Committee on March 10th. one of the important items for consideration will fie the Boy Scouts’ Jamboree at Dunedin next January. The Jamboree is being held in connection with the Exhibition, and the aim is to get two thousand Boy Scouts to attend. Since there are probably at the moment less than five thousand Scouts—excluding the junior branch of "Wolf Cuius”-—in the whole country the undertaking is a fairly ambitious one.

The Prime Minister has accepted the office of President of the Jamboree, and .the Vice-Presidents include the .Ministers for Education, Defence and Industries and Commerce, the Speaker of the House, and the- Mayors of the lour chief cities. There is every indication that the pioject will he taken up wholeheartedly so that the question of sending .a patrol or more of local Scouts is being advocated by the 2nd. Troop. As entries are asked for by April Ist. next, the matter will have to he settled at once. In addition to the displays by the various troops there will be athletic events to decide the Scout Championship of New Zealand under various heads, as well as a Swimming Gala and a Boxing Tournament. The suggestion by the Jamboree Committee is Hiat the fares to Dunedin should he earned by the hoys or troop themselves, while the cost of the camp, as such, should he paid in the same way as the ordinary summer camp.

From the hoys’ point of view the trip should he an exceedingly interesting and worth-while one, and there is little doubt that all those who are real ‘live’ lroys and active Scouts, will find a way of forming one of the party.
