SUNSHINE AND RAIN
(To the Editor ‘‘Waikato Times”)
Sir,—l was pleased to sec the returns in your paper of Wednesday last in reference to the above subject. It must certainly lie interesting to those who do not gel the whole of the official returns. H shows where the sun shines most and where it rains most. 1 notice that Nelson is the sunniest town in the Dominion ; I also notice that the places that get the most rain are among the places that get the most .sunshine. By that it shows that most of the rain must fall at night, when there is no .sun to hide. For instance, Wtiilii comes next to Hokitika lor amount of rain, hut for the whole year it comes second place for highest sunshine, and Hokitika, which is supposed to he so wet, is in filth' place in the Dominion for sunshine. But sir, I have procured a copy of the official returns for 1922-23, the last two whole returns completed, and on examination. 1 find that in the winter time, when the sun is most appreciated, Hokitika conies second highest for the three winter months. 1 would ho pleased if you would publish the following which is copied from the official returns. Amount of .sunshine enjoyed by 10 towns and cities in New Zealand for May. June and July for 1922. and May. June, and July for 1923. I have put them in order for easier reference: -
Nelson, 1922, olohrs, 1923 J2Bhrs, total 913 hrs; Hokitika. 431, -I'Jo. 539; Waimate. 439, 370, 809; Wailii 428, 37.1. 803; Auckland, 378, 342, 720; Wellington, 349, 321, 670; llanmcr Springs 318, 306, 664 ; Gore 298. 3-jO, 618; Mastcrton. 279. 267. 116; Dunedin 270, 212, 112. Being interested in Hokitika weather I have secured the .sunshine return.-, of it for live years in succession. They are: 1920, 1996 hours; 1921. 1991; 1922. 2009; 1923. 2097; 1924. 2924. So, sir, you will agree with mo thnl these returns speak for themselves, and prove that Hokitika is not the worst place in which to live. | ;un not a native of the place; I have lived there live years and I preler it to here for climate reasons, and I purpose going hack there very shortly.
