THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES
Tun Staff Ok J.tfk. The duty on Hour has been increased from £.l to £3 per ton. To suggest that wheatgrowiug and Hour-milting cannot be successfully conducted bohand such heavy protection is to confess that the industries have no right to exist in New Zealand. Since that confession is not likely to be made, the agitation for still further taxation c; imported wheat must he attributed to an insatiable demand for still higher ] lives by wheat farmers. The Government must not allow itself to he misled by such agitation. The. fact that Australia sells flour to the world at kiss v! ;.n tlie domestic price does not alone constitute dumping, and the additional fact that there is a duty of £3 a ton on all imported Hour, ensures that New Zealand mills are fully safeguarded against any possible element of unfairness in competition. —“New Zealand Herald.”
