David -Martin, who cut his throat with a penknife following on a drinking bout, died in the Wniau Hospital last evening. Sl'l’T. WARNER CENSURED. CHRISTCHURCH, January 23. At a meeting of the Christchurch hire Board, last night alter a discussion on the recent court proceedings a motion was carried that the Board severely censured Superintendent Warner for the happenings connected with the incident on December 2lUli. and in view of the excellent service rendered by the Superintendent for the past 13 years no other action would he taken at present. AMATEUR SWIMMING COUNCIL. CiIUISTC lIURCTI, January 23. At a meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Council the annual conference of the centres was fixed tor February 25th. The Australian Union wrote inquiring’" whether an appearance by Miss Wehsalan was desired at Auckland and if so, it would advise as to what the cost would he. Some members said they thought there should he no charge as Miss Wohsnluu would he passing through, jo nov case, on her return to Hawaii when her Australian tour would he over. Telephone word canto through late last evening from Kaitangata that a serious accident had occurred in the Taratu mine at about 5 p.m. The day shift had left, and there were not many men in the mine at the time. It appears that a slip of earth had imprisoned two of the miners, named McGowan a.ml Jordan. Jordan is a married man with a- family ol four. Rescue parties quickly got to work, and toiled feverishly for hours to release the unfortunate men. They were spurred on in their efforts by hearing the sound of tapping from within, and some of the rescuers thought they could distinguish the voice ol McGwan.
THEFT OF MTL’f. AUCKLAND. January 22. George Thomas Rumble, a milkman, for the theft of milk and cream from cans at the Auckland Milk Company’s Depot, was sentenced to a month’s imprisonment. A detective followed licensed at 2.20 a.m. and saw him take- a. quantity of cream from eight cans, anil replace it with water. He accosted accused, who admitted the offence. Accused hail been doing good business on a milk round, hut had to pay awav much of his profits to make restitution in connection with offences six years ago.
