SAWDUST IN STREAMS

(Christchurch “Press”). Sawmillers consider they have. a legitimate grievance against the Alarine Department in connexion with its prosecutions for the deposit ol sawmill refuse and sawdust in streams in mining districts. Some of the investors in the timber industry declare they have been misled by the statement in the State Forest Service Bulletin, No ] published by authority, in which the following advice is tendered millers erecting small plants:—Caro must he taken to secure a site where the water will not carry to a stream unless such stream has been declared a. sludge channel under the Alining Ad. It is pointed out that, the Hokitika, Teremakau and Arahurn. Rivers were all declared sludge channels, the last two in ISBS and the Hokitika River in 1 00:!. The sawmil!ors now find themselves met with the decision that such proclamation does not apply, as the deposit of sawdust is not strictly n mining operation, although the saw mill .licenses themselves have boon held to he mining privileges. The whole of the legislation appears to he in need of revision, and those sawmillers who have acted in good faith with the terms of the Forestry Depart men t’s Bulletin appear to ho entitled to compensation in view of the fact that it was issued under the signature of the Director of Forestry.
