(Received this day at S a .in.) NEW YORK. September (1
An unusual and a most interesting situation affecting the political campaign of the rival parties lia.s arisen as the result of the passing of the Aineric-a.il Woollen Company s dß'ieleiiel on Thursday which caused a break in the whole stock market, the woollen itself dropping eighteen points. The Democrats are maintaining that tho action of the American Woollen Company has proved conclusively that the Republican cry of prosperity was a myth, affording the evidence, if needed, of the complete breakdown* of tho I’ordiiey-MeCumher Tariff Bill. Mr Thomas Spellney. the Democratic Eastern campaign manager, says: “We are constantly told by the Republican Press and Republican orators that tho ltc-i'iihlican tariff means prosperity. In lt’22 the Republican Party gave the woollen industry higher protection than over given. Notwithstanding this protection the textile industry lias lowered wages, c losed up some factories, and in many instance's, lnctorios are running part time. The workers, certainly, have not benefited by the tariff, which they were told was passed for their protection.”
