Directly the result "as announced the LiU-rals were panic stricken at the possibility of the Government's resignation, and they rushed to the rescue and gave tin* Government a majority of sixty-eight. The question at issue was the liability of performances for charity to pay entertainment tax, the House voting for their exemption hut it is doubtful if the Liberals would have voted if they had realised the consequences. 'I he Liberals want an early election even less than the Labourites. In any case the point was of trilling importance, only £IOO,OOO sterling of revenue being in question.
