ANZAC DAY COMMEMORATION.

A meeting presided over by Mrs Pony, Mayoress, was held at the Soldiers’ Hall yesterday afternoon to arrange for the sale of poppies for remembrance in connection with the commemoration of Anzac Day on Friday, April 25th. It was decided to proceed on the usual lines. The supply of poppies is expected next week and will he on sale here from the 19th. inst. It is hoped to make a window display in Bevell Street, and continue the sale over the Easter holidays. Mrs Perry' undertook to arrange for a street sale on Easter Eve, and Mrs Singer offered to assist in the depot in Bevell Street. Mrs Butland was deputed to make the wreaths for the memorials and the Cemetery. It was decided to communicate with the country school teachers in respect to local sales throughout the district, and ask that orders for supplies of poppies he sent in as early as possible in the coming week. It was resolved to arrange for the sale of poppies at the several institutions, and also to meet the race trains etc.

The proceeds from the sale of poppies will be devoted to the soldiers’ unemployment fund for the winter period, and will be expended through the Beautifying Society which will supplement the. amount £ for £. and so enable the money raised to go so much further. The Anzac plot on Cass Square is to have special attention. On Anzac Day wreaths of poppies will be deposited on the Memorial on Cass Square as also on the graves of soldiers and nurses at the Cemetery.
