CRUISER VISIT TO LYTIELTON.
\V ESTLAND EX Cl’ BSIOX. .Matters are moving rather indefinitely regarding the pioposed visit ot the Westland school children to Christchurch for Elect week. I lie Canterbury Education Board is collecting information as to the number likely to travel and is conferring with the Xavv League. The Railway authorities at Christchurch appear to have expressed Hie opinion that it would hardly he pns, sible to bring over more than 100 children or so at once, and that it would he best to arrange for batches of about that number to travel by the ordinary trains.
There is a remarkable position, also, in regard to the train fares. If the Hokitika children could go there and hack in the one day, making it a day excursion the faro would he Gs Is, hut as the journey is broken by the stayover, the fare jumps to Its 2d! This seems an extraordinary position anfl a most unfair penalty for the Westland children. The fare quoted is to Christchurch and does not include Die extra distance to be covered by the journey to Lyttelton.
Mr 11. Bignell, Chairman of the Canterbury Education Board, is crossing to Christchurch to-morrow, and is to go into the matter with the Navy League authorities.
The following notifications of those prepared to travel have been received :
Hokitika State School: SI providing own accommodation; *i!> requiring billets ; total 127. ixanieri State School: 8 providing own accommodation : , requiring billets.
Run!a,..i State School: 6 hoys and 3 girls, all requiring to bc> hilletted.
Goklshorotigh : I boys, two with accommodation arranged. There is no advise yet as to provision for teachers or parents travelling with children ; nor of any excursion fares for adults apart from the suggested schools excursion. If the inducement were ofi’ering no doubt there would be a considerable exodus frem the Coast for Elect week in Christchurch, particularly as there arc to be so many attractions, including a special trotting meeting at Addington .
