TIMBER FREIGHTS.

cheap carriage to CHRISTCHURCH.

It is understood, in response to a local enquiry, that a sawmilling firm here has been advised that the freight on timber from Hokitika by railway to Christchurch will be 4s 5d per 100 feet on and after the opening of the line for general traffic on Monday, August 0. This is tho fixed through rate on a ono sectional charge, and is about half the prico charged on tho present three sectional rate at which limited quantities of timber aro ear-, ried. As showing the advantage of tho* through railway freight ns against sea borne transport, by the cost by rail to Greymoutii, thence by ship to Lyttelton, and then by rail to Christchurch, is about 8s per 100 feet. With the carting© cut in about half, the substantial reduction in cost should result in plenty of orders rolling in from Canterbury for early execution by tho West Coinst mills. The millers and their employees will no doubt express general satisfaction at the prospect of increased trade flowing this way. Tho position, however, is in keeping with the general expectations as to results which would follow once the line is in operation. In other avenues of commerce. also, there will bo similar material benefits.
