AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. U.S.A. BYE-ELECTION. NEW YORK, July 17. Telegrams from St Paul, in Minnesota, state that the early returns indicate that Mr Magnus Johnson, the Funner-Labour candidate, is leading bis opponent, Mr Jacob Preus, the Repubbean, at the bve-election there for the United States Senate, to fill tho vacancy caused by the death of Senator Knute-Nelson, a Republican. Tins is probably the most important bye-elec-tion in America since President Harding became President. 3bo Republican majority in the Senate, if Mr Johnson is elected, will be reduced to seven. Mr Preus ,wlio was Governor of Minnesota, resigned in order to run for the Senatorship. The Republican Party organisation has made strenuous efforts in support of Mr Preus. Both the candidates engaged in a stirring appeal to the people. Mr Johnson asked the fanners for support, claiming that the llarding Administration was neglecting their interests. Mr .Johnson although a regular Republican, attacked the tariff in order to gain the support ol Labour.

BRITAIN'S QUOTA. NEW YORK. July 10. Britain’s immigration quota for July which is 15.408, is nearly exhausted, and over one thousand British newcomers arc already here, or due in the next ten days at various American ports. These will he detained, and will probably be deported unless provision can be made to hold them over until August. . The immigration officers declare that efforts will he made to admit as many British arrivals as possible under the tourist arrangement.
