R.S.A. HALL.
OPENING BA EL. Tlte opening ball in the Soldiers' Hall in Sewell Street took place last evening, and proved a distinct success. The attendance was not as large as was expected, hut tho hall was well filled. The prevailing epidemic accounted for many absentees, even some of the committee going down. The ball which is about 75 feet long was gaily decorated with ferns:, flags and balloons, and well lit by electric light made a pretty picture. The floor, one of the main features of a dance, proved ill capital order, and showed the result of the work put in on it, it being exceptionally good. Capital music was provided by the Minstrel Oichestra, which were capably assisted by Mr F. Holland on the saxophone, nud his successful efforts were rewarded on more than one occasion with marks of appreciation, an operatie selection also winning well-deserved approval. Mr, H. Thompson had,' charge of the floor and kept the dancing moving merrily till nearly two o'clock. The Ladies Committee provided a dainty supper. The convenient arialignments for supper, and ol the hall generally were the subject of much commendation. During the evening the Piesident (Mr D. J. Evans) in returning thanks for the patronage given referred at. some length to the no! ossify expressed hy General Russell when here some time ago as to the return- 1 ed men combining for their own protection. and Colonel Young's hope that the R.S.A. would have quarters of their own. I lii.s hope had now taken shape, and when tho Club rooms were added to the front of the present building they should have a meeting place that would do the town and members credit alike, lie expressed thanks to all who had assisted in connection with the building. Messrs Mclntosh. Hart, l-.mmeti. and others and lastly expressed warm thanks In the donors and Ladies Committee wlm had so generouslv given their very he-t assistance in connection with the appeal lor funds to carry out the building operations. Dancing was then resumed until about. 2 o’clock, the gathering proving very enjoyable.
