MYSTERIOUS MURDER.

OF A. LONDON CAB-DRIVER. AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. LONDON. May 11. Scotland Yard is engaged in investi gating the mysterious murder of a taxicab driver, named Jacob Dixie, who was shot dead hy one of two men who hired his c-ah in Piccadilly and told him to drive to Bristol!. A girl informed the police that she saw a man alight from the cab. Ho appeared to be bargaining with the driver when suddenly she heard a shot ami saw the men running. The driver called out: “Keep hack; they’re armed,” and fell, slying: “They’ve got me at last.’ The men dashed down a dark street, discarding their revolvers. The police found in the cab a jemmy, a gold-top-ped rnalncea cane, and a pair of yellow gloves. Tbe theory is that the men were burglars who shot the driver when he threatened to inform the police. The taxi-cab owned hy the murdered man was of Benrdmoro make. It has been discovered that a Beardmore car was seen in the same street at the samo hour every night for the past three weeks. AVhethor it was always Dickie’s is unknown. Tho question -arises: Was tho secret haunt of a gang of burglars near where the eai stopped? It is known that Dickie had associates among East End racing men, about whom the police are making enquiries. Two revolvers were found near the taxi-cab, one with six rounds discharged. Another due is a scrap of paper on which was the name of a house in Dulwich district which was burgled tbe same night the murder way committed. It is considered thcie is little doubt that the cab was hired by the burglars for a night’s expedition. Dickie probably refused to go further mid threatened to tell the police. 1 lie police have issued a description ol a man who called at a house in the street where the shooting occurred and asked in an agitated voice to be allowed to go through. The householder refusing. he ran away. He was tall, aged about 28, and spoke with an American accent.
