SOUTH OF ROSS. Mr Jas. O’Brien. M.P.. is in re-eipt of the following letter from the Minister of Railways regarding the use o! Government rolling stock affecting small trucks only for, the carriage e.t settlers’ produce and stock over the tramway <f Stuart and Chapman Ltd., from "Waitoha to Ross, and vice versa, to link up with the Now Zealand railway system: "With reference to representations which have been made on your behalf bv the Hon. Minister of Mines regarding the use ol this Department’s rolling slock on the tramway recently constructed by Stuart and ( liapinaii. Limited. I have tl’.e holier to inform you that railway i dling stock can not be permitted to run on the tramway until the line lias I ecu brought up to the standard required by the Department. As a failure of the tramway might cause coniI lute destruction of railway vehicles, the factor of salety required bv the Department cannot bo reduced. There is also the possibility of an accident, resulting in loss of life to be borne in mind. •‘lt is therefore, regretted that no modification of the conditions on which railway n Ring stock is allowo<! to run on privately-owned lines can bo made in the present instance/’
