MORE HOPEFUL OUTLOOK. In reply to representations to the General Manager’s office at ’Wellington yesterday in regard to the tunnel tariff to which a reference was made at the Prigress League on r J uosday night, information ol an oflieial character was elicited that the three separate sectional charges would operate until tlie tunnel sections cl the Midland Railway was taken over by the Railway Department. The message further adiSed that, the General Manager was now in the South Is.and. but as far as et old be gathered it was highly improbable differential rates would be charged when the Railway Department took over the lino. It was further gleaned from the F’.n----g ol the Public Motks Department that goads traffic through the tunnel might he operating in a fortnight's time, but it could bo three nr I'diir months thereafter helore the line would be ready to hand over to the Railways Department.

If the ruling stands as rega:ds the differential freights for separate sections. it will be some time before there can be any real volume of goods traffic through the tunnel. This would mean an undue less all round, and the suggestion now is that the 'Railways Department should treat the two sections approaching the tunnel as cue continuous section, and make the separate sectional eh urge only in regard to two sections instead of three, and with the understanding that when the Hallways Department is in full control the through tariff for a single distune section only will prevail. A inquest to this effect will now go foiwnrd, and no doubt it will be supported in an influential manner by the Canterbury people. Jt is well that the matter has been brought to light at this stage'as it gives the opportunity to have the question fully reviewed before any veiy heavy impost i- allowed to fall on the district trade. Once imposed, such a tariff us was indicated would he an iniquitous charge, most unduly overloading the trade and commerce of the district.
