OTIRA TUNNEL.
(Grey Argus.) Another forward phase in the completion of the Otira Tunnel was successfully negotiated on Saturdal last. Ihe large BalK'oek boilers were heated and steam was raised. Everything vent off satisfactorily, the trial pleasing the engineers immensely. Mr L. Gunge engineer to Messrs J. H. Chalmers and Co., was m charge of the erection of the plant, and the successful trial speaks highly of his nbilitv. Enquiries made at Otira lead us to believe that freight trains will be able to run through the tunnel in about a fortnight’s time. A little pressure on the Public Works and the Railway Departments should bring about a passenger service as well as a- freight service.
