Bakers have only a few days’ supply, and if a shipment on the Kahika is held up the position will become most Serious towards the end of next week. Sugar is also in short" supply. Strawberry growers are among the small producers seriously affected. Those dependent or largely dependent on the crop are most disastrously affected.
A CONSTABLE CHARGED. HAMILTON, Nov.ll At the .Magistrate’s Court, Henry Thomas Smith, formerly a constable and Clerk of Court at Kawhia, was charged with theft of Government monies totalling £24f> and certain articles. Evidence was given that certain monies paid to Smith had not been accounted for, and the articles re- 1 ported stolen, were afterwards found : on Smith’s farm. lie pleaded not ■ guilty and was committed for trial to ■ the Sujn-eme Court, Hamilton. Tlie total liabilities are about £ISOO. The Assignee said that lie saw no statement from the bankrupt who had certain assets.
