BEAUTORD DEFEATS GLOAMING AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. SYDNEY, Sept 10. Yesterday the eagerly awaited race took place at Randwick for the Chelmsford Stakes. The result was:— Beauford (Wood) 1 Gloaming (Young) 2 David (Duncan) 3 Beauford won by three-quarters of a length, with a quarter of a length between second and third. The time avas 1.53, There were fourteen starters.
Steady ritin fell during the forenoon, but it failed to diminish the enthusiasm in the BenufOrd-Gloamirig contest, though the plethora of macintoshes and wet weather attire fobbed Randwick coui'se Of the bright, gay setting that would have been worthy of the occasion. After lunch the weaklier cleared beautifully but the track was heavy.
A feature of thci match was, that there was a remarkably even division of opinion among tho public and turf tipsters in their fancies, with Beauford however, slightly in favour. Atuch depended on the post positions. Gloain ing drew number seven place, and Beauford number fourteen.
Gloaming jumped to the front immediately. Beauford was slightly left. Passing the mile post, Gloaming jed from Tressayr, with Beauford moving into third place. Gloaming, Tressayr and Soorak led the field round the bend. Beauford was there seemingly unable to overtako tho trio. Furious challenged the three leaders on entering the straight, but then Beauford came fast and ho overtook Gloaming at the half distance. The Npw Zealander responded gamely to his rider’s prompting, but, though sticking gamely, lie failed to head the Newcastle galloper. Air Afason (trainer of Gloaming) said afterwards that Gloaming was beaten on his merits.
Beauford’s stock has appreciably increased as the result of the conquest, hut the admirers of Gloaming are satisfied with tho New Zealander’s performance! on the heavy going. Other results were:—
Tramway Handicap.—Rostrum 1, Fueristo 2, Loyal Irish 3. Won by half a length. Time 1.261. Spring Handicap.—Wirrnwnv 1, Afclyneaux 2, St Anthony 3. Won by iv short head. Time 2.7.
Gloaming’s trainer, Air Mason, in an interview, stated that Gloaming was as fit as he could he. and he was fairly and squarely heiltcMi. Two years ago, he said, it might htlvc been different. He was not so young as lie used to he. Beauford was undoubtedly a great galloper. Cupidon finished fifth in the Spring Handicap. Between 50.000 and 60,000 witnessed the Beauford Gloaming battle. This is a record for Tattersnll’s meeting.
