SATURDAY’S GAMES.
The Marist junior team to play Westland juniors as a curtain raiser on Saturday nfternoon are the winners of the West Coast Rugby Union jun-
ior competition, and are reported to be a fine heady -team with a fast lot of backs, so that the local players should be well up against it to hold their own The senior match between United and Kiwi is also sure to prove an excellent game. The Kiwi team is expected to put up a good fight and many followers of the play during the season think they can win, while their opponents are equally confident. A good fast game should result. The attendance promises to he a large one. Mr 10. Heenan will referee.
SCHOOLS AT PLAY. | REEFTON AND HOKITIKA. The lkefton School sent down a team of lassies (to play basket ball) and one of lads (to play football) to meet fellow scholars of Hokitika District High School. The visitors arrived on Tuesday evening, and were hiMctted throughout the town, and in the evening were entertained at a successful social gathering in the Supreme Hall. Yetstorday uho teams met on Cass Square under very favourable weather conditions, hut the visitors were somewhat overmatched ' in both departments.
BASKET BALL. Tlio girls teams met first at basket ball, when the Hokitika team showed to better advantage than the visitors, who were deleatod by 8 points to I. Mr J. Niven was referee.
FOOTBALL.
The football teams met at the conclusion of the above game. The play in the first half was fairly even, Hokitika having the advantage of the play, though hardly to the extent Of the score at half-time when they changed over with 7 points to nil in their favour. The second half saw the local team continue to improve their advantage, and before a quarter of a hour had gone the score had started to mount up and from thence on scores came with some rapidity, the Hokitika backs showing a distinct superiority. When time was called, Hokitika had scored 24 points to nil. The score was made up of a potted goal by Aitkin, and six tries, one of which Wogan converted. PALMERSTON N., September G. South Auckland (holders of the Northern Union Cup) met and defeated the Wellington representative team to-day before nil attendance of about 500. Iu the first spell Balks, the Wellington full hack, kicked three goals, one from half way, and thus scored the whole of the six points obtained by his side, throughout the game. Guthrie, on the Auckland wing, scored an unconverted try and the spell ended with the .scores: Wellington G, 'South Auckland 3.
In the second spell Auckland went at it with the wind in their sails and pressed nil tho time. B. Pa-ki, on tho wing, scored four tries, and the full back, Sherlock, also got home. Raynor T. l’eckham and AVlmll converted one each.
WANGANUI DEFEAT NELSON. NELSON September 6.
At football this afternoon at Botanical Reserve, Wanganui defeated Nelson by 13 points to 8 (two converted tries and a penalty goal to a converted try and a penalty). There was a largo attendance and splendid weather. Wan. ganui backs gave a hno exhibition. Wanganui acquired a lead of Bpts. in tho first spell. The second half was very strenuous and AAbinganui backs gave a. fine display.
MOASCAR CUB. CHRISTCHURCH, September 6. j The filial of the Monscar Cup competition, the secondary schools championship of New Zealand, was played at Lancaster Bark to-day between Auckland Grammar School (last year’s j runners, up), and Southland Boys’ High j School, who beat tbe holders (ChristI church Boys’ High School) last week for the honour of representing the South Island in the final. There was an attendance of about 400 spectat tors. Auckland won hy 1G points to 9. | THE CUB PRESENTED. ! After the match the Cup was presented to the winners by Major H. Hurst. ! .Major Hurst D.S.O. served throughout the war with the New Zealand .Mounted Rifle Brigade who are the donors of the Cup. Air McLean, captain of the Auckland team received the cup and briefly ■ replied. ! McLaren scored three tries for Auckland and C’oglan one, two being converted by Ewen. Harrington scored for Southland, Morgan converting, and Kilby potted a goal from the field.
OTAGO UNIVERSITY. DEFEAT SYDNEY EASILY. DUNEDIN, September G. The match between Otago and Sydney Universities was played to-day in beautiful weather before an attendance of 8000 persons. The game resulted in | a hollow win for Otago, whose l>acks | in the second spell dominated the play, j The game was one of the most spec- ■ tacular exhibitions of passing ever seen jon Carisbrook. In the first half, play '• did not reach a particularly high stand- ' ard, opportunities being missed on both j sides by faulty handling of the backs. : The spoil ended 10 to 6 in favour of i Otago. j By a strange coincidence 10 points I to nil was the score of the Otago team when they last met Sydney at a match j which was finally won by the visitors |by 45 to 10. On tbe present occasion, j however, the positions were reversed, and in tho second spell Otago added 25 points, while the visitors orilv added one unconverted try.
The scorers for Otago were MacKereth (2), Perry (2), Dickson (3), and Cabot, Stewart and Harty one each. Four tries were converted by Kingston. Tries were obtained for the visitors by Woodhead, Taylor and Foote, none being converted. RUGBY LEAGUE. (Received this day at 8 a.m.) SYDNEY, September 7. North Sydney defeated Glebe in tho final for the Rugby League premiership.
