HOSPITAL BALL.

The annual ball in.aid of the funds of Westland Hospital took place in the Drill Shed last evening, and was a pronounced success. There was a r cry large attendance, and until after midnight there was not half enough seating accommodation, while the floor was so packed that dancing was more of a difficulty than a pleasure. The hall had been profusely decorated with flags and fernery, and looked a picture. There, were a good number of fancy costumes, not as many as last year, which had a record number, hut there was much originality shown, and the results achieved generally were very successful. The judges of the most original and best fancy dresses had a difficult task, hut their decisions met with general approval, the announcement of the awards being the signal for hearty applause. The prizewinners were—Ladles, most original fancy costume, Mrs W. Barrowmnn (Post Office letter box), and for best fancy costume to Mjss Spoor (Turkish Princess), while the men’s prizes were awarded to Mr W. Oates Runtapu (Zulu Chief), for most original costume and to Mr W. O’Neil (Maori Chief), best fancy costume. The music was in the capable hands of Mr Lawn’s Orchestra, a number of extras being kindly played, while Messrs J. J. Breeze and 11. A. Thompson had charge of the floor. Supper was served in the Town Hall and here the Ladies’ Committee had prepared a very plentiful supply of toothsome delicacies, the general arrangements being excellent. During an interval Mr ,T. J. Breeze (Chairman of the Hospital Board) returned thanks for those present for their very substantial patronage, to all who had assisted in preparing the hall, specially including Dr Buchanan for greenery supplied, and the very capable Ladies’ Committee who had done such splendid work in winking the hall the huge success achieved. Dancing was kept up till two o’clock, the floor being well filled till the last.
