AObTBAIIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. THE FATAL FIRE SYDNEY, Aug. 28. Adams fire was confined to the George Street section which was separated from Pitt Street block by a light wall. The damage is estimated at .010,000 and is insured for 016,000. The cause of the outbreak is unknown. Tho fire authorities are unable to explain the collapse of the ladder which was frequently tasted and often carried four men" at the full height of 80 feet in practice. The men take positions and get the hose in position prior to turning on the water. It is thought the usual pressure of water suddenly caused the ladder to sway so far that the weight of the men broke it. The ladder was constructed of Oregon and ar-huood reinforced with steel bars and steel wires in tile file sections. The lowest was fixed to the carriage, the remainder sliding therefrom. Brown was single and joined the brigade after returning from the war. He died in the hospital without regaining consciousness. The hotel portion of tbe block known as Adams buildings hotel itself is only sligbtlv damaged. The chief losses were sustained in Adams cafe and premises occupied by tenants. The water made havoc on the lower floors and also did considerable damage to the adjoining premises of Gowing Bros and I alaee Theatre. '
