The e sc of D r Jekyll and Mr Hyde was recalled to-day by Judge Herbert in sentencing to a term of imprisonment Lorenz Dow Covington, a lecturer and explorer and member of the Royal Geographical Society. The judge spoke of Covington as a man of a dual personality, a low degenerate on one side and on the other possessing intellectual gifts. The prosecution was conducted by tho New York Society for the Suppression of Vice, to whose secretary Covington last. November voluntarily supplied evidence leading to the arrest and conviction of two men for having in i-eir possession improper pictures. The secretary subsequently discovered that Covington himself supplied the pictures to tne men.
After his arrest Covington was kept under observation in hospital and declared to be sane. An authority on Egyptology, he conducted an expedition to the Sahara Desert s me years ago. During an earlier period of his career he was on the staff of Sir Robert Hart, of the Chinese Customs. For the last six year s Covington lots been a lecturer of i lie Department of Education.

A conference at Chicago between the Labour Hoard and the Maintenance Wav employees has ended with the men’s decision definitely to postpone the stiike until further negotiations can he entered into with the individual railways. She sw am 200 yards in 171 4-osecs; 200 metres in 18(5 4-ssees; and 220 yards in 187. 4-osecs.
M iss Riggin, a New Yorker, set a. new American free style record, 300 yards in 157 3-osecs.
RADIX ICK’S PER FOR MANGES NEW YORK, July 4.
At Santa Barbara, California, Charles Paddock, University of California student, ran the hundred yards in nine and three-fifths sees. He did sixty yards in six and one fifth, seventy in seven and one tenth and set a new world’s record for the eighty in seven and three-fifths. He also ran 125 in twelve and one-fifth; and 175 in seventeen see.
