[by TBLEGJtAI’U —PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. DUNEDIN NORTH ELECTION. DUNEDIN, Juno 21. The bye-election for tbo Dunedin North seat, rendered vacant by the death of My E. Ivellett, took place today, and resulted in a victory for the Labour party. The final voting reI turns were as follows: • Mr J. W. Munro (Labour) ... 3,382 Mr Clarke (Reform 3,239 Mr Begg (Liberal) 918
Total 7,539 Majority 143 The number on the roll was 11.08, of which 7,500 voted to-day. At the general election in 1919 when Mr Kellett won the seat 8,702 votes were polled of which 4,781 were for Kellett and 3.978 for the official Labour candidate.
Seventy seven absent voters permits have yet to bo counted, and there are several declaratory votes.
The result of the poll was received bv a crowd of over 1000. and when Mr Munro appeared ho was received with the greatest enthusiasm, the cheering lasting several minutes. Each of the candidates spoke, but their addresses wore very short and wore ricall[v confined to returning thanks. It is worthy of nolo that this is Mr Munro’s sixth attempt to gain Parliamentary honors.
MONEY AT CALL. WELLINGTON, June 22. Wellington City Council has just had a pleasant surprise from London. It had been decided to leave a portion of the recently raised loan at cfill in London to meet certain -contingencies and the Mayor has been advised that such money bears interest at three per cent, per annum. Probably the whole of two hundred thousand sterling which is to ho left n London on account of power, house plant, being purchased in England will bo placed at call. This is one of the things they do better at- home than in New Zealand where the bankers do not allow interest on call money, j

At Hie Magistrate’s Court to-day Christina Dvison, alias Mary Dawson mi elderly wonin with ISO previous convictions for vn.rious offences was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for the theft of goods from shops. -The charge related to eleven premises, the , goods being valued at £lO. The evidence showed that the police removed from accused’s house drapery and other goods to the value of £IOO. Some of it has net yet been claimed.
