Tho match for the sculling championship of New Zealand and a purse of £2OO, subscribed by tho people of Pietoil, belkecit Put Haimiin ami “Jumbo” AVolls both of Blenheim was got off at Pieton on Saturday. The weather was wretched, rain falling in torrents all day, but the conditions were satis-
laclory for sculling, the water being like glass. A good start was effected, but Hannan (tiie holder of Hie championship) was obviously a class ahead of Wells, and he drew steadily away. AYlu-ii half their journey had been coverered, Hannan was loading hv a length and a half. At this stage, AVolls informed the umpire that his slide had broken, and he and Ids boat were flicked ii]i by a launch. Hannan finished the course alone, covering the distance in 21.14. The attendance was poor, on accfnmt of the weather. Tho purse was paid over in tho presence of a big crowd at the theatre at Pic-ton on Saturday night.
