TUESDAY, MARCH 28th
ORDINARY MEETING
The general committee of . the above" Association met at the Town Hall at 7.15 o’clock, there being present:— Hon H. L. .Michel .M.L.C. (President) in . ttye chair, JMesdanies . Jlutler, Ben,nett, Thompson ( and- f Hickson, Messrs .Niven, Evans, Irvine, Wild. Butler, Preston, Carter, Boy.d, Bruce, Haile, (Richards, Pilkington and Payne. ■The,formal business being transacted
a letter was received from, the Borough Council notifying the appointment of H. Haile as custodian of the
Squares etc. as from Ist April, the Association to contribute half the cost. The appointment was approved, and the conditions of engagement agreed to. The Borough Council intimated that the cost of the hot water service on Cass Square, including the building was £129 2s Id, half the amount being payable by the Beautifying Association. The Chairman said the cost was greater than the estimate—£7s. The account was passed for payment, also other accounts for various works performed. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Associa-. tion was then held. The report (published yesterday) was taken as read, the nieeting complimenting Mr Niven on the faithful record given of the year’s operations. The accounts audited ,by Mr Irvine were submitted. and adopted. The Hon Treasurer stated the credit balance, including material, was £47. The Chairman appreciated what had been done. They had a good year financially. lint further funds would require to, be raised to carry on. Hon Michel referred in terms of praise to all who had helped financially, specially stressing what had been done by the Ladies’ Literary Club. Messrs Evans and Carter supported the Chairman’s remarks in regard to the works carried eut, the latter suggesting steps should be taken to deter repeated damage to the fences and grounds. In eon neoion with the latte it wa« resolved to invite the people t«> help in protecting their own property and to ask the Borough Council to offer a reward for reporting damage done by individuals.
The balance sheet was then adopted on the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Mr Preston. When the election of officers was called on, Mr Bruce said as an outside citizen he would like to propose that the past year’s officers and committee he re-elected as a mark of appreciation for the good work done. Mrs Hudson seconded.—Carried. In acknowledging the compliment of reelection, Hon Michel took occasion to extend congratulations to Mr Haile on his appointment as custodian. Mr R. Wild was appointed to the second vacancy of Vice-President. The Chairman reported Messrs Gibbons and McFadven had offered to organise! al concert in aid of the funds of the .Association. Received with thanks and the concert fixed for May 24th., (Empire Day) admission to he 2s and Is. ' , Mr Irvine was appointed auditor for the year.
Mr Wild moved a vote of appreciation to Mr Niven for the good work performed by that gentleman a$ Hon Secfretary. Miss Thompson seconded., Mr Niven acknowledged the vote and referred to the assistance given by the President and Vice President. to .whom, also, votes of thanks were carried.
The meeing concluded with a general discussion on ways and means as to how the operations of the Association might bo extended, several suggestions lieing brought forward for consideration. The meeting concluded at 8.35 p.m.
