AUCKLAND SUICIDE AUCKLAND, March 18. Henry George Benda-11, a married man aged 48, was found in his bedroom at noon today with a severe wound in iiis throat. He died before a doctor arrived. Deceased was a mattress maker. He had been depressed lately. He leaves a widow and one child.

EPIDEMIC OF THEFTS

AUCKLAND, March 18

An epidemic of thefts of cash boxes prevails in Auckland. Recently solicitors’ offices in one of the largest Queen Street buildings were visited while two of the staff of Mr J. F. Hosking, barrister and solicitor were at work in separate rooms. The intruder entered a small door in the counter, and removed a cash box containing about £3O. It is stated that the offices of two othe,- solicitors were also entered and thefts in them committed, on tbe same day. On Thursday a clerk employed by a well-known Auckland solicitor delivered a cheque at the wrong office. Discovering his mistake, the clerk went to the office and asked for its return. Tlie lady clerk told him that while she was in the offiee, a cash box containing the cheque as well as some money had been stolen. VESSEL AFTER. WELLINGTON, March 18. With tlie assistance of the pumps of the tug Tera whiti, the Fire Brigade extinguished an outbreak on tbe Hatipara at 4 a.m. Tt was found necessary to flood the hold, wherein there is now Id feet of water. About 600 bales of flax, a small quantity of wool and general cargo was destroyed. The cause of tbe fire, which started in the general cargo in No 1 lower hold about 9 o’clock last night is unknown.
