GENTLE SARCASM
(Lyttelton Times),
Look at the very small war-increases the unfortunate dairy-farmers are receiving. Everybody knows, or should know, that during the last few years dairying in this country has been carried on at a loss, and only the patriotism of the producers and the companies induced them to make butter and cheese at all. It has been recognised that the people must eat, and that therefore some folk have to work oii the farm from daylight till dark in the public interest. Tb 0 shockingly poor returns in recent years ought to make the hardest consumer sympathetic. For instance, look lit these London prices:
1913-14—1921 —AverAverngc. age of Latest Quota. Hotter, per cwt. 5 8 4 915 0 Cheese, per cwt, 219 2 7 3 9 Discouraging figures like those would have resulted in dairying going right
out of fashion if those concerned had not determined to sacrifice themselves fot the public good. Mr Noswortliy is plainly bound to take whatever steps are in bis power to protect the producers from their own generosity.
