t ,.. -ilLh'atiAbfl—per press association] INCREASING MILK YIELt). LECTURES TO DAIRY FARMERS. M ASTER TON, May 19. “How to increase the milk yield of dairy herds” was the subject of a series of lectures delivered by Mr A. H. Cockayne (Government Biologist) to various branches of the Farmers’ Union throughout the Wairarapa. The last of the lectures was delivered at Fed the rston on Wednesday, and so great has been the interest aroused everywhere, in the district that the lecturer lias been asked to give another series in the near future. Mr Cockayne demonstrated with the help of charts that those districts of : New Zealand which went in for growing supplementary crops to ensure proper feeding of cows through the year showed a greater milk yield per cow than districts that relied mainly oii grass pastures. He contended that with proper feeding the present average yield of 1701 bof butter-fat per cow could be raised in one season to 2001 b per cow. This would mean that another 23 millions sterling would accrue to farmers without its being necessary for them to increase their dairy herds. , AN ESCAPEE SENTENCED. , AUCKLAND, May 23. Georgi) Vincent Keys, who was recently captured, after one month’s escape from goal was sentenced to nine months in addition to six months for his previous escapes.
