CI,AIM FOR 1" 19.000. AGAINST COMPANY DIRECTORS. AUCKLAND, March 14. The sum of £19,0(H) was involved in an action begun at the Supreme Couit to-day, before Justice Sim,-when cer tain shareholders ol tho Portland Cement Company called upon certain, directors of the company to show cause why they should not contribute tho above amount of money in consequence ot alleged misfeasances and alleged breaches of trust while acting as Directors. The plaintiffs were Sir George Clifford. Dr Edward G. Leginge, W. Milne Hamilton . (Solicitor, Christchurch), James Stevenson (sheep larmer Spreydon). The contributors and shareholders were represented bv Mr Skerrett K.C., of Wellington, and Mr Wright of Christ church. The defendants’ counsel were Vernon Herbert Reed, Mr Johnstone (Auckland), Geo. Winstone, the younger Mr MeYcagh (Auckland), and Heath cote IL Williams, (Messrs Myers and Morrison, Wellington). No evidence was called, evidence hating been taken on affidavit. This and other documentary evidence was so voluminous that it had been hound lit volumes to facilitate reference . Mr Skerrett occupied all day in outlining tlw case for plaint ills. The ease was unfinished when the Court rose. A REFORM CANDIDATE.
WELLINGTON, March 14. Iu addition to Colonel MacDonald Mr William Morrison ol" Monvellton who contested the Patou seat against the late Air Powdrell will stand. Mr Milford, Leader of the Opposition has announced that Mr Morrison is the official Liberal candidate. Though Colonel MacDonald announces himself as a Reformer, no steps have been taken to select an official Reform candidate. BAND CONTEST RESULTS. NELSON, This Day. A large wooden dwelling at Motueka owned by A*. Manov, was totally destroyed early this morning. Tho premises were unoccupied at the time. Insurance £2OOO in Alliance and furniture £SOO in same office. A NARROW ESCAPE. AUCKLAND. March 14. The captain of the scow AYanderei, seeing a flare inside Hawaii Island, found three men clinging to a launch burnt to the water’s edge. The men had already been an hour in the water. The launch sank five minutes after the men were saved. They came from Matakina, and were bound for fishing. Th ( , weather was fine and sea calm. Tim Innnch was suddenly tenvleloped in flames, apparently from the engine room. The occupants jumped overboard and remained in tho water till help arrived.
