STATE' SCHOOL CONCEIRT.

On Friday last tho annual concert in aid of school funds took place in the Totara Hall and proved to ibo a brilliant success both financially and -otherwise. There was a large attendance, and those present thoroughly enjoyed the programme submitted. A pianoforte overtutre was nicely played by Miss Bella Evans. The next item was a song entitled “The Merry Sailors” by the infants. The infants did remarkably well and looked quite the genuine article dressed in their sailor costumes. ‘‘Seven Little days of the AVcek”, was also well rendered by seven little girls aiid Master. V. ' Chapman. The song “Christmas Eve” .by the girls was nicely given and heartily applauded,. A pianoforte duet by Misses M. Muir and A. Hedwig was also nicely played. A dialogue “Mrs Brown’s Visitors’’ by Misses B. Wilson, C. Chalmers, J. and J. Denin was splendidly actod and caused much merriment. A very popular item was a song “Come to my Garden of 'Roses” by Miss Je=sie Davidson of Hokitika, this young Indy is always a favourite with a Ross audience and as usual inet with a flattering reception. The next item, physical drill by a squad of boys was performed to perfection, the instructor (Mr Boyle) and the boys are to lie congratulated on the excellent exhibition displayed. Another old favourite Air Dan Roberts then -favoured the audience with “A Little Boy called Taps”, needless to say Mr Roberts had to respond to an encore when he sang “Queen of the Earth.” The last item of the first part of ttie programme was a vocal duet, “You and I” by Mrs Chapman and .Miss Davidson which was nicely rendered and mucli appreciated. The second part of the programme consisted of the operetta “Cinderella,” the following being the cast of characters: —Cinderella, Miss F. Chapman.; Patienpe and Charity (her cruel sisters! Miss Bella Evans and Miss May Moore; fairy god-mother. Miss lli|ene Goad; Lady Guy, Miss Connie Chalmers; Prince, Master Prince Evans; Papa. Master Arthur Parker; also numerous fairies, ladies, courtiers and attendants. The staging-of the piece would do credit .to any professional company as would also the histrionic ability displayed by many of the performers. Tho-success-ful performance throughout the concert reflects the greatest credit on those responsible, viz.. Miss Smith, Mrs Charman and Miss Milner. They are to 'he congratulated on the result of-their efforts, which must have entailed a large .amount of hard work. The concert concluded with a verse of “God Save the King.”

j Tlie accompanists for the evening were Mrs Chapman, Miss B. Evans, arid Miss D. Wic-kes. At an interval during the performance the Mayor (S. P. Evans, Esq.,) thanked the audi- , enc-ft for' their attendance and congratulated all concerned in the successful performance.
