Thoughts For The Times

What we owe to Aviators. The Duke of York, at tlie dinner to the “First Hundred British Aviators”: “J am a very indifferent pilot, but I have flown sufficiently to realise what difficulties had to be overcome by these men, and wliat courage was needed to surmount them. Even in a well-timed and well-tested machine, after a course of instfuctipji frpm a very experienced pilot, and thus with the margin of danger reduced to a. iniuimuip, there have been occasion—l cannot deny it—when I was glad to get down, and I take offmy hat to our honoured guests, for their pluck. The foresight and initiative of our first hundred pilots made it possible, when the Great War broke out, for Great Britain to overtake, and eventually surpass, our more ready and better prepared enemy, and to gain finally the wonderful air supremacy which we possessed at the time of the Armis- : tice, and which, I trust, we will never lose. AA r e as a nation owe these men a verv large meed thanks for the pioneer work they carried carried out n a matter of such national importance at such a heavy personal risk, and I am proud to have the privilege of meeting them, and glad to have the opportunity of paying them a small part of the great honour due to them.”
