An appeal has been made by the Women’s Benevolent Committee for left-off clothing and boots for children and adults. At a meeting of the Gold Miners’ Compensation Committee at Rimu on Saturday night, a letter addressed to Mr Seddon M.P., asking him to organise a deputation of gold-fields’ representatives to the Rt. Hon the Minister of Mines was approved. It was confined to alluvial gold mining throughout New Mines was approved. It was agreed further that the demand for compensation be confined to alluvial gold mining throughout New Zealand, and that the different mining centres in Otago be communicated with and asked to co-opepate. The different bodies or persons to be communicated witli are:—Naseby Borough Council, Tuapeka County Council, Waihemo County Council, Lakes County Council, CropiwelJ Borough Council, Alexandra Borough Council, and Mr J, Paterson, Cnrdrona. It is hoped the Naseby people will take the matter up and actively organise the province so as to ensure strong representations being sent from all parts to the Government, Residents of Kuniara and Stafford are being asked to move in the matter also.
A meeting of the Westland Acclimatisation Society was held at the County Chambers last evening. The absence of Dr Teichelmann was referred to, and a motion expressive of sympathy with him in his illness and wishing him an early recovery was adopted unanimously. It was reported that the sale of the booklet “Beautiful Westland” was exceeding expectations at this period of the year. Sir James Allen, High Commissioner wrote from London expressing his appreciation of the publication. It was resolved to have the deer herds in South Westland reported on, and to adopt Mr J. Forbes’ suggestion and secure the services of Mr C, Hodgldnson of Otago for the purpose. It was stated that as a result of the report it would be possible to increase the number of deer per gun which may be taken, and also to add to the licens in HassS -Valley and tributarii,-. A license for a new stalking district in the Okuru Valley was recommended and granted. A number of accounts were passed for payment and other routine business disposed of. During last week the Railway Department carried north from Hokitika and south stations about 550,000 feet of sawn timber for export from Greymouth.
Mr J. H. Kirkwood, the Australian champion golf-player, will, it is understood, visit Hokitika shortly, and is being invited to give a display on the Mahinapua links. The following additional subscriptions to the Westland War Memorial have been received from Weheka : F. G. Williams and Sons, £2; M. Sullivan, J. Sullivan, James Walsli, John Walsli £1 each. Total £6.
The presentation hall in the Drill Shed to-morrow evening promises to be a great success. The special function of the presentation of the Fowler Cup to the winners of the senior competition will prove of interest, while the music in the hands of the special orchestra will be of the best.
The net collection of customs’ duties for the year ended March 31st .was: Greymouth, £30,956; Westport £12,164; Hokitika £10,417. The total for the Dominion was £5,304,725, (including £284,608 through the Postal Department). The percentage cost of collection was: Greymouth, £2 I6s 3d; Westport £5. 5s l'Od; Hokitika”i4£2 4s lid. The average cost for the Dominion was £1 10s 7d.
The West Coast. Caledonian Society held an enjoyable Ingleside on Friday evening in the Supreme Hall, Hokitika, when a large n'umber of members of the kindred .societies of Greymouth and Blackball were present, under their respective Chiefs McKenzie and Clarke. The Iqchl Society extended an invitation to a Jarge number 0 f their supporters, and judging from the enthusiasm shown, one and all thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The local Pipe Band opened the proceedings with the skirl of the pipes; and the beat of the drums. Dancing interspersed with songs, recitations and speeches were rendered by tlie following ladies and gentlemen :—Song, “AVe’d Better Bide - Awee,” Miss Bruce; Highland Fling, by the juveniles of the Society; Song, “Jock o’ Hazeldean,” Miss Hazel King; Impromptu speech, “Tlie Effect of the AA r ar, ” Miss Paterson. (Grey) ; Song, “Scotland,” Miss Rci,..ison (Grey) ; character sketch, “Aunt Doleful;” Miss Brebiier, (Grey) ; recitation from “The Lady of the Lake” Chief McKenzie; Song, “Ye Banks and Braes,” Miss Edna Perry; reel, Societies juveniles; Song, . “The Standard on the Braes ’o Mar,” Miss O’Brien, (Grey) ; Song, “AVhere hath Scotland found her fame” Mr Douglas, (Grey) ;• duet “The Crookit Bawbee, ” Miss Davidson, and Mr Douglas. The music was supplied by members of tlie Royal Orchestra, Messrs Lawn, Gibbons and Ross; extras being kindly rendered by Misses Daly, Lawn, Brebner, Jacobs and Mr Berry. Tlie thanks of the Society are due to Mrs J. J. Mclntosh, who supplied the usual coffee, and to all lady helpers in connection with the supper arrangements, which helped to make the gather iqg such if hqwjiffg success.
